چکیده

The German Federal Environmental Agency (Umweltbundesamt – UBA) operates an experimental field on the southern outskirts of Berlin for the investigation of special aspects of environmental hygiene. One part of the field consists of a storage pond with subsequent bank filtration, artificial recharge and slow sand filtration where experiments on the behavior of hazardous substances during bank filtration, artificial recharge or slow sand filtration can be carried out on a field scale without any adverse environmental impacts under nearly natural conditions. Experiments on the elimination of cyanobacteria and their toxins are currently being conducted in the plant as part of the research project of the KompetenzZentrum Wasser Berlin (KWB) named Natural and Artificial Systems for Recharge and Infiltration (NASRI).

Visualisation of the microbial colonisation of a slow sand filter using an Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope

The removal of contaminants in slow sand filters occurs mainly in the colmation layer or schmutzdecke a biologically active layer consisting of algae, bacteria, diatoms and zooplankton. A ripening period of 6 8 weeks is required for this layer to form, during which time filter performance is sub-optimal. In the current study, an environmental scanning electron microscope was used to visualise t...

Effect of ozonation on the removal of cyanobacterial toxins during drinking water treatment.

Water treatment plants faced with toxic cyanobacteria have to be able to remove cyanotoxins from raw water. In this study we investigated the efficacy of ozonation coupled with various filtration steps under different cyanobacterial bloom conditions. Cyanobacteria were ozonated in a laboratory-scale batch reactor modeled on a system used by a modern waterworks, with subsequent activated carbon ...

The adsorption of cyanobacterial hepatoxins as a function of soil properties.

Cyanobacterial hepatotoxins present a risk to public health when present in drinking water supplies. Existing removal strategies, although efficient, are not economically viable or practical for remote Australian communities and developing nations. Bank filtration is a natural process and a potential low cost, toxin removal strategy. Batch studies were conducted in 12 texturally diverse soils t...

Identification and Quantification of Major Organic Foulants in Ultrafiltration of Treated Domestic Wastewater and their Removal by Slow Sand Filtration as Pre-treatment

The present study investigates major organic foulants in ultrafiltration (UF) of treated domestic wastewater and their removal in slow sand filtration. Identification and quantification of major foulants was conducted in labscale experiments. Quantified results suggest that biopolymers (large molecular protein-like and polysaccharidelike materials) are major organic foulants in UF. This conclus...

Chapter 13: Cyanobacterial toxin removal recreational waters

Although federal drinking water regulations determine the quality of potable water, many specifics influence how each utility chooses to treatment water. Some of the specifics include source water quality, storage capacity, existing unit process, and space. An overview of the US recreational and drinking water regulations were discussed in context of cyanobacterial toxin removal and inactivatio...
